It is a short sighted description, it's more like the study interactions of groups of people and the enviroment i.e. the society in which they are raised.

Yes. Well, sort of. Sociology is the study of the influence of society and culture on individuals and groups. Considering societies/cultures obviously wouldn't exist without the people that belong to them, it would be fair to say that sociology examines the influence that individuals can have on peoples behavior/attitudes. I wouldn't say "emphasizes", personally, because sociology tries not to stress any particular influence, to thus remain as neutral as possible. :)
