  1. False.  A microscope is an instrument that magnifies a small object.  A simple microscope in its simplest form consists of a single converging (positive) lens, like a magnifying glass.

A compound microscope uses two positive groups of lenses.  (Two single convex lenses would not form a useful image.)  Each of these lenses (eyepiece and objective) will contain both convex and concave lens elements.

  2. True. The microscope uses the magnifying powers of two convex lenses to produce a magnified image of a very small object. A powerful microscope uses short focal lengths.
