  1. I did hear on the radio the other day that China out purchases the US in SUV's. So one could say, they have indirectly already succeeded in this endeavor.

  2. that's true for certain specific models.

general motors sold more Buicks in China last year than they sold in the U.S. for instance.

probably false in general though as most Chinese live far below what is considered the poverty level in the U.S. many of them at the subsistence level & they still have a major over population problem, even after 30 years of the government enforced  1 child per family  policy.

  3. false

  4. False.

Less than 5% of Chinese now own cars.  It going to take a while for that to pass 50%.

And China will be a part of the solution of global warming.  It's beginning to dawn on them that ruining the world's economy with global warming:

will not be good for business.

For us, the future of cars lies in alternative energy.  Nuclear, solar, and wind power plants, and vehicles running on electricity or hydrogen made by them.  We'll be fine if we don't stupidly cling to fossil fuels.

  5. The majority of Chinese will not likely be driving. And the majority of us won't likely be either. Although!

The cost-per-kilowatt hour of electricity produced is lower, now, for solar and wind farms than for fossil fuels. And a single (though substantial) breakthrough in the digging of geothermal wells could likely make THEM more economical as well.

That means that, if we act now, electricity prices will not go any higher, though gasoline likely will.

Frankly, I'm not seeing a downside to this at all.

    1) We break free from our desperate reliance on very unstable nations

    2) Energy prices - adjusted for inflation - drop

    3) Smog becomes history

    4) Cars become much quieter

    5) In the transition, we're likely to see great improvements in public transportation ... so we needn't drive...we can nap or work or whatever on the way to work

    I like it.

    ...

  6. With Bush/McCain, this scenario is a possibility

  7. False.

50% of the Chinese population are still peasants and it will take quite a while to become part of the globalized economy.

Generally spoken, oil prices are global and are increasing while the price of new cars compared to the purchasing power is decreasing, both in America but also in China.

The main driver for the affordability will be the energy prices (gas prices).

The cost of CO2 certificates for 1 tonne of CO2 is around $30 and might increase to $100.

Even with a CO2 cost of $100/tonne CO2, and $120 for the barrel of oil you would have the following cost per liter of crude oil:

$0.75 for the cost of the oil itself

    $0.25 for the CO2 cost.

As you see, saying that the cost of global warming will be the prime driver is "wishful thinking".

The affordability of oil will be a matter of economic class as the economic disparities worldwide are rapidly increasing AND the supply is not sufficient for the demand

  8. As sad as it may be many American's would fight tooth and nail before giving up the electric horse so to speak.

Sure China will have many more car users. They have already been increasing in leaps and strides. This is great cause for concern. Not just China, not just America, but the whole world needs to transform its thinking when it comes to lifestyle and how it impacts the environment.

Best case scenario we walk, bike, or taking efficient public transportation & or renting a car when needed. There are systems where groups of people own and share one car as well. If you must own a car make sure it is an efficient one, try to live close to needed necessities such as work and food, and only drive when you absolutely have no other reasonable choice.

  9. True if we can afford to buy one ? China is the new super power by the international bankers .
