Server at Red Lobster says that they are paid less than minimum wage and are taxed on every entree ordered; if this is true what could be ordered that he or she wouldn't be charged for?

  1. i can't believe how many people don't know that servers are paid between $2.13 an hour and $2.99 an hour depending on what state you're in. yes we are taxed on the tips we make, so if someone doesn't tip we still have to pay taxes on the amount the IRS feels we would have made. i have been a server for over 20 years, and I've waited tables in 7 different states. because of the taxes owed we don't even get a paycheck! (although in FL i got a small one like $20.00 a week, because there's no state tax). to all the people that ask why we would be a server if this is true; because we only work 5-7 hours per shift, we have very flexible schedules, and average between $15-$20 per hour, and in fine dining much more. i want more people to know the facts, thank you for asking this question.

  2. They probably get paid less than $4/per hour due to the fact that they also receive tips. Alot of restaurant make the waiter give a portion of there tips to the busboys and cooks.

  3. There is no way they get paid 4.00 they have to get paid minimum wage If that was true why do they work there that's dang sad

  4. yes.

    it could be worse though.

i worked at a tgi fridays and they get paid $3.15/hr plus tips that they have to share with the bartenders, hostesses, and bussers.

and if their tips aren't as much or more than the tax, there was a list in the back of people who actually OWED money to the IRS.

as if it's their fault people don't tip well!

  5. All waitresses are to be paid less than minimum wage due to their tips....this is the norm

  6. Both true and false.  The $4.00/hr is possible depending on the minimum wage of the state they are in.  Most servers make 1/2 the minimum wage for hourly rate but it is made up for in tips.   There isn't any restaurant that would charge its servers to serve the food that is already being paid for by the customer.  That would be illegal.

  7. deff false!

you have to get paid min wage or you can sue the company, its a fact becuase if they are not then they are being over worked, even with tips they have to get paid min wage of whatever state it is.

  8. As several people have already said, wait staff are (along with farm workers and various other special cases) exempt from the minimum wage requirements.

This is why tipping is so important - wait staff make nearly all their money off tips, not off their hourly wage.

So be nice and tip generously.
