  1. Not in a bag necessarily.

The pilots carry their own personal phones which can be used in an emergency.

Also many planes have a portable SAT phone (not part of the plane) in the cockpit which can be used in an emergency as well.  These are very common when flying over remote areas.

  2. Not true.  The only phone in a bag is the pilot's personal cell phone.

  3. Not the case... I am not aware of any phone in a bag.

Many commercial and private jet airliners have backup systems in case of radio failior, but they are built into the aircraft and not portable.

  4. No.  Not true.  While the pilots may have their personal cell phones in their flight cases, theirs (like passengers') are turned off during flight.  Also, cell phone operation is sketchy at best when at higher altitudes.

However, there are backups to the normal communication systems.  Most, if not all, commercial aircraft have 2 communication radios installed.  Generally, #1 is used for ATC communications and #2 is used for company frequencies, monitoring 121.500, or communication with FBOs.

Losing communication in a modern commercial aircraft is rare.  But it can happen from time to time.  In those cases, there are established procedures for the flight crews and ATC to follow which allow the flight to continue operating safely:
