Trulli pleased with Pirelli tyres behaviour in Australian Grand Prix
Formula 1 Lotus team driver Jarno Trulli has praised 2011 Pirelli tyres, during the Melbourne race. He said that after the Australian Grand Prix that he was ‘shocked’ by how much the tyres had changed since 2011 tests.
He added, "The most important thing to be said is that every result this weekend, whether positive or negative, has a common cause: the Pirelli tyres. They've left us all shocked. I don't mean they were better or worse than we had expected.”
The Italian driver conceded the Pirelli hard and soft compounds behaviour was quite different than during the winter testing.
He went on to say, "I think that came from a completely wrong translation because I see Pirelli did a good job from Australia," Trulli told a news conference in Sepang. "We didn't expect to have a problem with the tyre warm-up. There wasn't degradation;
one driver did a one-stop strategy.”
After the successful Australia event, Pirelli is still trying to adjust itself better and looking to provide best tyres for the conditions and race circuits. Trulli admitted that Pirelli’s first show in 2011 season was pretty good, but there was still a
lot to learn about these tyres.
Sauber driver Sergio Perez surprised everyone by taking only a solitary pit stop during the Melbourne race.
Before the start of this season, the different team’s members predicted massive stops for the 2011 season, but the season opening race did not show more than two stops over the race. No doubt it was very surprising for the drivers, as there was no more degradation
issue with the Pirelli tyres.
For the season’s second race Formula 1 members predicted three to four stops, due to the warm temperature of Malaysia and higher degradation of these tyres.
