I just discovered a leak in my kitchen which, had probably been occurring for months. 2 of my nice, large, wood cutting boards were sitting in water and their edges were covered in moist, black and green mold. YUCK!

They are soaking in the sink in a chlorine bleach/water mixture as I type this and I'll put them out in the sun this afternoon - but will they ever be safe to use again....really? I've had these boards for years and love them, but this is so disgusting.

  1. i would trow them out just cause if you chop on the board you might get sick and it is not worth it throw them out don't risk it.

  2. I would just throw them away.

  3. You can wipe them down with full strength bleach and put in the sun. Scrub them and rinse well in cold water. Rinse with a vinegar solution and then plain water. Let them dry and see how they smell. If they look good and smell like wood then keep them. You can keep them nice by rubbing some mineral oil into them.

  4. do not use it again. if you clean it urself, then there might still be some germs on there. getting sick over a cutting board is not worth it

  5. i dont think it is safe, because it depends on what kind of mold it is. stachybotrys, a particular deadly strain of black mold, cannot be cleaned. if it spreads throughout the house it can kill whoever is living there. If it is not too serious, you can hire professional mold cleaners to clean the boards. but i suggest you get the whole house checked if it really is the stachybotrys.

  6. Try sanding the board until you reach clean wood,

  7. p**s on it

  8. In my opinion you would not want to go to a doctor that was going to use a wooden instrument on you that he/she had used on another patient.  You'd be thinking that no matter how much it was cleaned "germs" could be lurking between all those wood fibers.  Used tongue depressors, anyone??  Eeewww!

Mold is a biohazard.  Bite the bullet and get rid of those old boards, or be creative and find a non-food use for them outside.  Or else I'm never  coming to dinner again!!
