  1. If you are just starting out I would suggest a book called "Unpuzzling your past" by Emily Croom. It's under $20 and worth every penny.

If you are wanting a magic website without doing any work, there isn't one. This is something you have to start with yourself and work backward. You also need to document with birth, death, marriage certificates, obits, family bibles, etc. This is the only way you can prove this is family. This is VERY important.

Anything online is only as good as the researcher and I have found so many errors in info online. I started researching long before anything was put online so I am use to working my tail off to find what I need. Now there are lots of websites to find stuff but few of them are accurate. Do the leg work yourself. You'll enjoy it but it is costly.

    Good luck in your quest

  2. go to about.com, type in genealogy and click the first link: genealogy.about.com

Kimberly Powell gives a very good beginner lesson and websites/sources to search.

  3. It helps to interview any family members who may have some branches in their memory to start.  Then I have had success with Googling names if they are obscure enough.  Genealogy.com is a great source and also if you know the general area where your family comes from, ie small town pennsylvania check out the halls of records/courthouse records.

    Good Luck!
