Volleyball has a thing called "zero period" which is practice before school.Do you think I should try and practice with the class? Im just tryin to get more thoughts on that.Im 6''2, and I already know Im center.Oh, and what workouts should i do jus running and crunches ?

  1. A sophomore at 6'2", you are automatically in as long as you show the right attitude :)

Don't worry too much about the tryout, but you do want to refresh yourself as soon as possible.

Go with zero period is a very good idea, if your parents can get up earlier and drop you off at school or if you can find a carpool (hopefully you are one of those luckiest who live within walking distance to your school).

Find a local gym that has open volleyball would be another option, especially if you can get a friend to go with you. Try talking to some senior players in the gym and get some advice when possible.

It would also be very helpful if one of your friends' parent or your own parents can help you with some practice. Make sure you practice on the court (indoor or outdoor).

  2. practice and you'll get it. Talk to the coach to help you. i didn't try out and I'm a slouch now. don't let that happen to you. Talk to the coach and just maybe they'll help you.

  3. Try to practice with the class. It will give you an idea of the skill level of the other girls and how you compare to them.

For a workout specifically for volleyball players, here's what I normally do: running (mostly sprints), jump rope, bike, stairs, medicine ball, weights, squats, push-ups against the wall (it's less stress on your shoulders: stand up with your feet about three feet from the wall and do a push-up) and then I always end with at least 25 good approaches/block jumps without a ball; crunches, if done right, can help, but I've found that approaches to the net do the same job as a crunch while incorporating volleyball. You should probably work out at least five times a week until tryouts because there's only a little time left. When it gets about a week before tryouts, tone down the workouts a little so you aren't sore and tired for actual tryouts.

Just so you know, the "center" position is actually called the middle blocker. Also remember that coaches like loud players who are team players. Good luck at tryouts.

  4. For fundamentals, play as much as you can with people who know the game.  Maybe even get together with some other players and run some drills on your own time.

As for workouts, I'm a short guy (5'9).  So vertical leap was a concern.  Jumping rope really helped get my legs in shape for repetitive leaping.  I'd imagine that's especially good exercise for middle blocker.
