Trying to apply for financial aid for college but/.......????????/?

They want all my parents information and i moved out when i was 16 .... my parents dont help me with anything, i really dont even talk to them much... how do i get around this or what do i do... ????????????

  1. If you don't live with your parents, then file independent. You won't have to put any of their information on there.

If you are estranged from your parents there is a chance the financial aid office can deem you as an independent for financial aid purposes.  This process is not automatic based on a story from you and must be proved with a number of documented items.  Talk to your financial aid office about your living conditions and ask them what they would require for you to become independent.  There are strict rules they must adhere to from the Department of Education to make this happen though and may require some work on your end to provide all that is needed.

    Oftentimes they will seek letters from people like guidance counselors from school, clergy members, or doctors etc.  The burden of proof is on the student to show abandonment from the parents in these instance.
