Question:

Trying to catch a MAC flight?

My fiance is stationed at Sheppard AFB at the moment and Im trying to visit as often as possible. The problem is, a flight out there costs me minimum $450 and I cannot afford that every month. I was wondering if anyone has information on MAC flights. I am a dependent by my father so I still have military privileges until I'm 23. Can anyone give me any useful information on them?

  1. It's now AMC, not MAC.  And you cannot fly Space-A within the US without your sponsor.  So, unless Dad is going to fly with you each time you are not eligible to fly.

Sorry.  Hubby and I were engaged for 2 years, he Va, me Mo.  I understand the desire to fly out to see him, but you have to make a choice. We only saw each other 4 times in those 2 years, due to cost and teaching schedule.

Edit:  This website has lots of good info, including which bases you can fly out of/into.  Sheppard is not on the list, and the closest is Tinker, which is about 3 hours away.  If Dad agrees to fly with you, you both would be category 6, which is the lowest priority.  You must remember that there is NO guarantee on when the flights are leaving and when flights are returning and if they will have space on them.   My children and I fly Cat. 5 from overseas and we have missed flights by 1 seat, and we were the first ones on the list for Cat. 5.  It's also very easy to get stranded somewhere and have to buy a 1 way ticket home.

    Good luck!!

  2. You need your sponser, your dad. Plus you must not have a job, b/c Space A flights are very unrealible to takeoff on time. You really cantcount on them going anywhere when they are supposed to. I only used them when traveling internationally. I have saved a fortune that way!!!!!!!!1

  3. You can't fly within CONUS without your sponser.  Since your Dad is retired, that bumps the two of you to the lowest category, which will make getting seats risky...anyone with orders will get seats, then active duty members flying without orders (and their dependents if they are with them), then active duty dependents without orders.  It can mean waiting up to a week to get out and the same for coming back.  I understand your dilema...is is possible for you and your fiance to take turns purchasing the tickets..you pay one month, he the next..or to split the cost (I don't think you should have to pay it all on your own).

  4. If you joined up, you could get stationed together.

  5. you cannot fly Fly Space A CONUS without your sponsor.as your sponsor is retired you are Cat 6, the lowest category and face the highest possibility of being bumped.

and you only  ave dependency status until you are 23 if you are a full time college  student.  otherwise you will lose it at 21.

the schedules for AMC hops are no longer published online.  you will have to sign up in person at the terminal.

  6. As a dependent of a retiree you cannot Space A fly without him with you as the sponsor and you are Category 6 out of 6.  So flying alone isn't an option for you.  The only way of that happening is if you buy a commercial ticket.

Then there is the possibility of being delayed, bumped and everything else in the book.  And it isn't a round trip flight it is one way.

If your dad is going to fly with you, you have to look at what flights are going from your location to Sheppard and then from Sheppard back.

look for deals online and see what you can find.

  7. How old are you? This has direct bearing on whether or not you can do it unaccompanied.
