Trying to connect to xbox. trying to connect to xbox live for the first time. in network settings

Question

trying to connect to xbox live for the first time. in network settings and test xbox live connection my wireless network is connected,my IP address is confirmed,my DSN is confirmed,my MTU is confirmed,my ICMP is comfirmed the next test is xboxlive and i am asked to download a console update which i cant seem to download so i cant join xboxlive. any ideas???
