Question:

Trying to convince my parents to let me go to therapy?

Okay well I want to go to therapy because like I'm really down on myself about everything, even if I'm good at something and I think I want to try either group or one on one therapy, but my parents won't let me. Were really well off, our insurance completely covers therapy and money is not a problem. However, my mom thinks that if I go to therapy then future jobs I want won't hire me because of a history of therapy and I'll never get into college and I'll have a horrible life, and my dad thinks it's just a "phase", it might be, but I still just want to try it out. What could I say to convince them to let me go?

  1. Try a anonymous group therapy, your local mental health clinic.....Online groups are a good way to go too

You just need a place to vent the things that errrrrrk you

  2. just tell them how you feel it might work

  3. Talk to a school counsellor, trusted teacher, or your GP about your concerns. Let them be the one to approach your parents.

And how exactly are future employers or college going to find out? Things such a therapy are completely confidential. That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. Surely they realise this? If not make sure you inform them of that.

Therapy gives you the opportunity to clear things from your mind, and talk through your problems without judgement. If anything it will increase your chances of getting into a good college and work environment as it can help you achieve goals and focus your mind on what's important.

  4. I feel your pain.  I was diagnosed as severely depressed two different times while I was still young and in school.  My parents refused to allow me to get any sort of therapy, the first time was because I was "just putting on an act for attention" and the second time was "The government will take you away".

I hope you can get therapy, tell your mother that no one can get your medical history unless you allow it.  It would be MUCH better to get help now than having to struggle with depression through school and then into college or the working world.  You're still young enough not to have years worth of additional baggage to work through, which just keeps piling on as you get older.

    Good luck.

  5. well you should say that i am really down on myself right now and i am just in the dark side and that i really think it will help me a lot by boosting my self-esteem.  I am really depressed right now and it would really do me good.  I need your support please are you in this with me?- i hope that will work.

  6. your mom is kind of over reacting colleges don't read ppls medical records that information is suppossed to be/and is kept confidential. iTS A CRIME FOR NON AUTHORIZED ppl besides your doc or a federal investigation by the FBI etc to be checking your medical history.

I know that i serioulsy have heard that if a student is suicidal a college won't accept them but i dunno if thats true or if thats everywhere. I think they just want to be sure the person will be stable before coming in. But tehy don;t check your medical history.

But by all means tell your parents "would u rather see me depressed to the point of thinking about suicide including the fact, that my parents arn't talking me seriously or would u rather me go to at least  to 1 appointment and start seeing why i feel this way and wat i need to do and if its just a phase or not?"

By all means your dad could be right but u know urself better than anyone else so by all means continue to bring it up !!!!!!!! If anything make an appt urself and just go. Be advised some ppl only try to force pills on ppl which is not right so make sure u feel comfotable with whoever u get  if not find someone else.

:) be safe and be strong. Peace.

  7. if you can afford it or if your insurance will pay then, why not? we all have had times when we need to say something to someone else besides a parent or friend. having someone view YOU from a different prespective might just be what you need.-blurey

  8. I WILL FIRST TELL YOU THAT ONE OF MY SONS NEEDED THERAPY AT THE AGE OF 6, BECAUSE HIS BROTHER DIED.  HIS SCHOOL OFFERED ME TO HAVE MY SON SEEN AND I ACCEPTED THEIR OFFER.  HE WAS DUE TO SEE A CHILD PSYCHOLOGIST AND THE REFERRAL WAS MADE BY THE SCHOOL, BUT WAS LATER CANCELLED BY OUR GP WHO SAID THAT HE DID NOT NEED TO BE SEEN.  THE GP HAD NOT EVEN HAD THE COURTESY TO LET ME KNOW THE REASONS WHY.  LATER IN HIS TEENAGE YEARS MY SON BECAME DEPENDENT ON DRUGS. HE IS NOW RECOVERING FROM THIS, BUT FROM THE AGE OF 16 HE HAS HAD A SEVERE MENTAL ILLNESS.  PLEASE TELL THIS TO YOUR PARENTS.

IT DOES NOT MATTER WHERE YOU GO FOR THERAPY, WHETHER IT IS NHS OR PRIVATE, YOUR RECORDS ARE CONFIDENTIAL.  NHS AND PRIVATE HOSPTIALS ARE NOW ALLOWED TO DIVULGE YOUR INFORMATION TO ANYONE, EVEN IF YOU APPLY FOR A JOB IN THE NATIONAL HEALTH SERVICE, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO DIVULGE THIS INFORMATION.  YOUR INFORMATION FROM ALL SOURCES IS PRIVATE UNLESS YOU VOLUNTEER IT, AT WHICH POINT, EVEN IF SOMEONE WANTED TO GET YOUR INFORMATION YOU WOULD HAVE TO GIVE YOUR PERMISSION.

TO CONVINCE YOUR PARENTS I WOULD TELL THEM THE ABOVE INFORMATION AND SAY TO THEM THAT WITHOUT THE TREATMENT AND ADVICE YOU MAY GET, YOU FEEL UNABLE TO GET ANYWHERE IN YOUR LIFE.  I ALSO THINK THAT YOU SHOULD CONTACT THE CITIZENS ADVICE BUREAU ABOUT THIS AS PERHAPS YOUR PARENTS ARE BEING "OVERPROTECTIVE".  ALSO, YOU HAVE THE HUMAN RIGHT TO HAVE THIS INVESTIGATED.

I DO WISH YOU WILL AND WELL PRAY FOR YOU AS ANY PSALMIST WOULD.

    KIND REGARDS.
