  1. A single is a one bedroom apartment. A studio is generally a compact apartment. A loft is usually a psydo-second floor where you can stick a tv with a couch up there or something. In a complex..mine for example, a single is $875 a month. A double is $1100. So by getting a good roommate you could save a little. If it's on the top floor or on the end your electric bill will probably be higher in the summer. On the flipside about 80% of noise comes from above, so if you like quiet, you should consider a top floor or a townhome. Shop around, some companies may offer 9 month leases therefore eliminating summer costs or pressure to find a subleasee if you won't be there. A couple years ago my parents bought us a condo (albeit without financing) and sold it later, making what was equal to about a year's tuition.

  2. The previous poster did a good job explaining it. However, in the context of a college, "single" doesn't usually mean a 1-bedroom apartment, it usually means a room in a rooming house or dormitory.  That means no kitchen and possibly a shared bath, but the sleeping area is a solo affair.
