Trying to find a children's book about an Irish Tinker and a dog called 'Himself'?

I'm trying to find the title and/or author of a children's book published in the 1960's/early 1970's about an Irish tinker who travelled around Ireland in his horse drawn caravan with a dog called 'Himself'. the book is illustrated and aimed at 6 to 10 year olds.

I've searched the web and book searches to no avail. Can you do better? 'Best answer' given to first correct.

You're not going to believe it, but the title is:

"A Dog Called Himself" by Kenneth Bird

It's the first in a series of 13 that he wrote.
