Trying to find a movie?

Question

OK, so i can only remember two parts to this movie. In one part there is a teenager bouncing a basketball in a school gym by his self. Near the door is a hurt bird and he bounces the ball near the bird for a bit, then it goes to a distant shot and you hear the ball bounce one last time and the bird dies. The other part i remember is there's an old man sitting by his window at night ( he's related to the boy in some way i think) while he's sitting there a cat jumps onto the sill and he starts to pet it. then he grabs the cat and tries to shove it into the oven, the cat ends up scratching him and getting away. I don't remember anything else about the movie, hopefully i have given enough.

Apt Pupil sounds right to me as well..  (I know the cat scene is in it.. don't recall the bird, but it's been years since I watched it)
