Question:

Trying to find out who holds old Philadelphia Life Insurance policies?

I am a funeral director in Oregon. One of my families has brought in a Philadelphia Life Insurance policy that was purchased in Texas in 1988. The Texas state department of insurance tells me that they were acquired by Conseco. Conseco tells me that they only acquired half of Philadelphia's policies, and that the one I have was not one of them. I have reached a dead end. If anyone has any information, or if you just have a good link to a search-type website I may not have heard of, I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

  1. I found two companies with previous ties to either Philadelphia Life Insurance or Conseco.  They were Philadelphia American Life Insurance which was then acquired by New Era Life Insurance and I also found that Colonial Penn used to be involved with Conseco.  I have no idea if either of them will help you, but it's a start.

More likely than not, if this gentleman still had the life insurance policy, he would have been paying premiums at some interval over the last couple of years (annually, quarterly, monthly) and it should state on the policy what type of billing interval he was set up on and the premium amount.  The family can then look through his bank records and see who he was paying if he was still paying for it and still had the insurance.

It's possible that he bought a whole life or universal life policy that only required one payment up front or for only a set number of years, but they are pretty rare and you should be able to tell by the policy declarations.  It was say something like "Single-pay life" or "15 pay life"
