Question:

Trying to gain a more consistent swing any tips?

At times I can hit beautiful shots that fly straight as an arrow and the correct distance for the club I am swinging, the rest of the time I either shank them right, hit them fat or thin or just plain short, the only thing I am good at is putting (usually 2 putts from 30+ feet, and generally 1 from within 10 ft) just getting to the green is the problem.

  1. Well i would say put the same swing on every shot. Don't try to swing your 4 iron harder than your 8 iron. The same swing will be faster and the ball will go farther with a longer club. You may check to see if your practice swing grip is as tight, tighter or looser than when you hit your shot. Try to mimic everything during practice, including hitting from bad lies after a bad shot. The biggest key i can give is don't swing hard. It doesn't get you anywhere. Try to key on accelerating from the top of your backswing all the way through the ball into your followthrough. The biggest mistake all golfers make is deceleration at the ball. If you can get by this, all shots will be purer and straighter. Choke up if you catch it fat, down if you catch it thin. check your practice swing to see what your tendency will be before the shot. then execute what you have learned from your practice routine.

  2. i find that if set up all your clubs off your left heal and dont swing too hard just take it back nice and slowly and let the club head do the work

every shot try your hardest not to move your head on full shots let your right shoulder bring your head up.this should stop you duffing it and thinning it. as for shanking, put more weight on your heals than the fronts of your feet.

  3. Not really a tip but a tool. There is a company called Medicus where they designed a club to bend when your swing is in error. Its looks like it really works and is not expensive.

It helps with drivers, irons, and putters!!

    Good Luck!!!

  4. You need to be consistant.  That will first start with a pre-shot routine.  Get comfortable and get your mind off your swing and on your target.  Once your consistant with your pre-shot routine then you can work thru problem times like these.  I practice my pre-shot routine even while I'm on a driving range.  It has become just as important as my swing.  I would also try swinging about 80%.   Hit clubs for a while that you know you will hit good.  When warming up, use the same clubs each time (pw, 7, 5, 3 then woods).   This will develop confindence.  Try swinging with your feet together.  That should help elimate any upper or lower body movement that may have creeped into your swing.

  5. Dude just buy the medicus dual hinge 5 or 7 iron. It comes with a DVD that will not fool you if learn how to hit the ball far and straight with that nothing will stop you. Alot of practice is need but that is the best tool out there read about it is the best selling aid in history.

  6. It sounds like a balance issue, or a tension issue.  Read "Swing the Clubhead" by Ernest Jones, the greatest golf instruction book of all time!!!

  7. Without actually seeing your swing, I doubt any of us can offer much help.

However, Golf.com has listed the Top 100 Teachers since 1996, I believe. They have put together a few videos (IE: "More Consistency") and they also made one of the best game improvement books on the market "Golf Magazine: The Best Instruction Book Ever!." I have both and I would highly recommend the book. I think it has a Perfect score on Amazon's customer reviews. I recommend checking it out.

Other than that, I guess I would recommend searching the 'net for Grip, Address, Body Position, and Swing improvement tips/drills. Spending a good hour with a local Pro would likely help you out most, but the book and video(s) I recommended would actually cost less, and you would always have them at your side.

    Good Luck!

  9. Ok to recap -

    you either hit them

    the right distance, or short

    straight, or shank

    solid, fat, or thin

Impossible to know foresure without seeing your swing, but the first thing I would look for is how much your body is moving during the swing. Usually this lateral movement will cause all sorts of crazy shots .. like the ones your talk about.

  10. Only one solution for your problem.  More practice.  You want to take the beautiful shots you hit and repeat them over and over so get thee to the range and start beating balls.  You need to get the muscle memory on those good shots.

  12. Let me give you the best tip I ever got.

You have to maintain your spine angle. If you maintain the spine angle you have at address and through out your back swing the club has to return to the same point of origin. Your shoulders, spine, upper body will move laterally simply because of the weight shift. That's fine. Just don't move your shoulders, spine, upper body vertically. That up and down motion is what causes so many missed shots: fat, thin, skulled, topped, you name it. It's simply too many moving parts in a very short time and you lose track of where all of those parts are. Keep it simple. Maintain the spine angle you have at address and you'll see an immediate, repeatable swing that will allow you to work on other facets of your game.

  13. Without seeing your swing, the quick answer is to take some lessons and practice, practice, practice.

  14. Without seeing your swing the only thing I can suggest would be to shorten up on your backswing.  This will allow you to have much more control of your club.  Your distance may suffer a little but I would rather have control over distance any day.

  15. · “FOUR MAGIC MOVES to winning golf” by Joe Dante is a great book! Not many pictures, but if you are serious pick it up.

    Tip 1

At the top of your swing the first move should be a lateral move, toward the target, with your hips. Not a shift or rotation.

    Tip 2

Tight right elbow in your back-swing, get a nice inside out move.

    Tip 3

Lag or late hit for power and speed, don’t slap, hit through the ball, especially with your driver, golf is a sport, play like it! Does it look like tiger is "taking it easy" when he hits 320?

    4.

    · Best for last, practice your through swing. The point en-witch you make contact, until the complete follow-through. Notice the closing of the club-head, bent left arm, straightening of the right arm, balance!  Watch tiger at 33 seconds in this video:

This is the part of the swing most golfers don’t practice, and it is critical to hitting clean shots.
