Question:

Trying to get fit for the Army...what should I do?

I want to join the Army National Guard but I'm having a hard time getting in shape. I'm a 21 year old female 5'3" and I weigh 170lbs. For the past two weeks, I have been stretching for 1/2 hour with the exercises my fiance (who is a PFC in the Army) gave me and then I go and run a mile. Well, I try to but I can't run the whole thing yet. I end up walking for about half of it. Then I come back and do push ups and sit ups. Then I'm done. I don't know what else to do. I try to eat as much protein as possible and have not been eating junk food. I drink lots of water and haven't had soda in a month. I know it's only been two weeks but I feel like it's going to take forever before I can join the Army. I still feel fat. I wish I could just join right now but I know I'll die at RSP. Any suggestions? I'd like to join by October. Do you think that's possible?

  1. Here's a link to the Army weight control program. It has links to some diet stuff and the fitness stuff. I don't think you'll be able to do it by Oct. That's too fast. Maybe January.

  2. Don't allow your self to walk during your run.  Your heart rate is already up, and if you walk your going to undo what you just did.  I used to tell my soldiers that I would rather see them jogging during a run than to walk.  The trick is to dig deep in too your self and determine how bad you want to be a soldier.  Good luck.

  3. Sounds like the exercising is good.  I'm assuming this is every day?  If not, do your routine every day, if possible.

Cut out any sugar, and snacks.  Cut breads, pastas.  Only eat proteins once a day.  Eat fruits and veggies as much as possible.

Just re-read your summation....If it's only two weeks, you should start to see results about now.  It takes about that long for your body to start showing it.

Try some weights to build upper body muscles.

  4. Your work out routine is the least of your problems.  You need to drop 30 pounds by October.  That is pretty aggressive in and of itself.  But running 3 miles a day and watching everything you put in your mouth will go a long way in help you achieve your goal.
