Trying to get picture from laptop on tv

Hello. We are not very computer savvy. We bought a cable that connects to our laptop and tv but the picture only comes through when the computer boots up and shows the windows logo, Is there a setting that needs to be changed. We have an acer laptop and a dynex monitor replacement cable? Thank you for taking the time to help
