Trying to get ringtone to samsung slider, but get unsupported file type messege?

i have a new samsung slider, and i wanted to get a new ringtone. I had music on my phone but i couldn't access it to a ringtone. so i went to a ton of websites to use their "free ringtone makers" but they didn't work.

when i right clicked on an itunes song and saw the "make a ringtone" option, i thought it was perfect. I cut it down the the size i wanted, loaded it to my memory card and put it in my phone.

but now, when i want to make it my ringtone, i get the whole "unsupported file type" and can't do anything.

what can i do to change the file type or fix my new phone?
