  1. Congratulations! You have blown the left channel of your amplifier. this happens when u have speaker with a rated impedance lower that ur A/V reciever can handle. Find a new reciever and match it with your speakers Ohms.

  2. you didn't leave any makes and models which would help.

#1   unplug all gear while you hooking it up.

#2  when you say subwoofer, you didn't say "powered sub" so I am going to assume you are hooking it up using speaker wire.

So first thing, snip the ends of your wire down to 1/2"  you dont need a ton of bare wire sticking out.  this is the main cause for overload.  Second if you have a non powered sub the wire trail goes like this..  out of receiver into sub out of sub to main speakers.

Hooking up a powered sub wont cause what you're talking about to happen.

  3. Sounds like something shorted out. If trimming the wire down to 1/4 to 1/2 inch bare ends doesn't fix your issue, replace the wire running from the receiver to the speaker. Also, if you want to make sure that the bare ends aren't fraying as you insert them into the receiver or speaker, tinning them will hold the wire strands together.
