The brand name is Phillips. The instructions provided say to use an a/v cable from the entertainment system to the cable box(Comcast). Will that work on Hi-Def channels? I'm going to use an HDMI hookup for the DVD upconverter, but is there any other way to have the theater speaker, surround effect while watching cable TV?

  1. I have several questions, first, what is the model number of the home theater entertainment system? That would be a huge help.

To get started, no, you typically cannot get 5.1 and definitely not 7.1 surround sound using RCA A/V cables. HDMI is the only way to get 7.1 surround sound, although I don't beleive any TV is broadcast with 7.1 surround sound. You really need to be able to use at least a digital cable, optical cable, or HDMI to get the surround sound you are looking for. Post the model number and I can tell you your options!

NEW INFO. With the new info, I'm afraid I can't tell you much more. I can't seem to find the specs for your device. But, if your home theater system does have an RF connector that you can connect a coaxial cable to, then that is your best option. Run a coaxial cable from your comcast box to the entertainment system. That will give you the 5.1 surround sound. If you don't have that option, check and see if there is an optical out on the Comcast box. You might be able to do it that way. Good luck! If you have more info, post it and I will see if I can help!

  2. It will work - but it depends on the type of cable your "Phillips" system accepts:

L/R RCA Cables - this will give you stereo or ProLogic at the best.

Optical/Coaxial Digital - This will give you DD5.1 sound.

And if you are using a standard-def cable box - you only get ProLogic sound at the best.

I suggest you upgrade your Cable box to HD. Otherwise you have a HDTV - and no source of HD signal.
