Trying to load an ipod shuffle to my computer for the first time, help?

OK so i just bought an ipod shuffle today, and it didn't come with the ipod cd thing but the lady said i could use the cd from my last ipod that died.. ok so i hooked it up like an hour ago and it just keeps saying "your ipod needs to be formatted. please click the "format" button to continue" and then it has a thing bellow that saying "waiting for ipod..." and a thing showing it's loading. but it's been loading for an hour now.. is that normal?

You should also download the newest version of iTunes just to be safe.
