  1. Found two article that may help, linked below.

The idea of going to a her bank and asking for cancelled checks to find out who she paid (insurance premiums) seems like a good idea to me.

  2. Normally I would say search through all the papers and documents in their house if they have a policy you should come across it.

You may have to go through all the old checkbooks to find when the premium was last paid. This might mean looking back as far as one year.

Check old credit card statements. Your relative may have paid premiums by credit card.

Ask your relative's lawyer, banker, or accountant.

Track down your relative's auto or home insurance agents.

If they were employed they may have some coverage with the employer.

Wait until the next premium notice is sent.

You can also have the Medical Information Bureau conduct a policy search for $75.

  3. In your state you may be allowed to petition a court for policies she applied for when alive.  Almost all insurance companies submit applications through one records center (to see if there is potential fraud or other nefarious actions possible).

You may be able to have a person go through the process to legally 'invade her privacy' especially if foul play is probable.

[Example:  Someone removed her personal papers in an attempt to change the beneficiary arrangements.]

Many of her policies could have been medical, not life.

Be aware, and proceed with due deliberate speed.
