well my life's dreams has always been to one day be a police officer, i live in Southern California and would like to stay in the area so my 3 choices would be LAPD, CHP and the Sheriffs department down here. I am trying to do everything i need to make my dream come true (criminology major in college, probably joining the national guard as an MP) as of now i am only 18 years old, turning 19 in a couple of months so i still have a couple of years to keep working on all my stuff

but the biggest problem to me is that when i was younger, i had smoked marijuana, i only did it twice but i know i would probably fail a lie detector test if they asked me about ever having used drugs.

so what do i do?

is there some sort of waiver or anything i can do ?

please any answers help just no dumb pointless ones =)

  1. Your previous answers are both false including the one mouthing Police.  You and I both know they perform a Polygraph test.  Agencies across the U.S. do not hire drug users or past drug users.  Although this does not look good for you (twice), it will not prevent your dream to come true.  Before you take the test, they give you a practice test to ease your nerves (standard across the board to do so).  A 'sometimes' useful tip for the polygraph is to answer the questions without giving them much thought.  Be truthful though.  If you are a bit nervous throughout it, the sketch marks will be a little high on all answers - this is common.  If you think about your answer much, you will become more nervous.  Relax, get your degree, and apply.  Smoking just weed twice years ago does not put you in the drug user category.  Good luck with your career.

  2. Yes the LAPD will give you a polygraph, and yes they will ask you about your use of drugs.  Just go with the flow, answer each question honestly, do not voluteer anymore than what they are asking for.  If they want more details they will ask you specifically with single questions.  Use of grass as a youth is NOT a disqualifier, especially if it was only two times.  You did it out of youthful curiosity and and you really didn't like it, right?

  3. They do not hook you up to a lie detector test and if they ask you just calmly say no. All they test for is your blood which would show if you have done drugs recently and they do your finger prints as usual. But for your question just say no, they do not hook you up to a lie detector test.
