  1. How about using CLEAR storage containers and stack them.  They also work great in the children's rooms for books and toys. A different colored top for each child tells them whose property is inside.  They can decorate the sides with stickers, etc.

Set rules that say, "If you take it out, you have to put it back when you're finished.  If you spill it, you clean it up."  The first three children are old enough to do chores and help you out.  You're not doing them any favors by not insisting that they make their own bed and clean their own rooms. Shoes go into the closet, dirty socks and clothes go to the basket.  They need to learn to be responsible now or they never will be.  You don't want your children to grow up knowing nothing but how to operate a cell phone, computer, and TV.

My daughter taught her children to do this and her house stays clean and neat.  She and her husband work full time as well.

  2. When space is tight , think vertical.  Use as much vertical space as you can....shelves, tall bookcases etc.  Store the items that you don't use very often on the top closet shelves.  Remove all out of season items to the basement or attic to free up the storage space.  Try laundry baskets in the bottom of the kids closets to store the toys that they play with often...its a quick cleanup to toss them in the basket and shut the closet door.

The best way to deal with cramped spaces is to live minimally.  When kids get a new toy they pick an old one to donate.  It makes them think real hard if bugging you for a toy at the grocery store is worth giving up a loved toy.  Learn to utilize the public library instead of buying books and videos that clutter up the home.  Get rid of magazine subcriptions, sort your incoming mail next to a trash can or shredder to get rid of junk mail before it accumulates.

I could go on....I'm trying to deal with this stuff myself...lol.

  3. Sort through everyones clothes. Put clothes that don't fit anyone or nobody wears in a bag to get rid of.

Hang up dresses, nice shirts, sweatshirts, nice pants, etc. in he appropriate bedroom closets.

Put other clothes such as jeans, T-shirts, and undergarments in the dressers. In each person's dresser have one drawer for shirts, one for pants, and one for underwear and socks. You could also have one for school clothes and one for play clothes for the children.

If it is warm where you live, put all winter/cold clothes in a plastic bin. Put the plastic bin(s) in the basement or attic where you can easily reach them. Do the same when it gets cold.

For each persons closet purchase a cheap shoe rack if everyone has a lot of shoes, otherwise just purchase one and put it in a general closet.

Have your children go through all of their toys and get rid of the ones they don't want anymore. For the ones they do want either get under the bed bins for them or a toy rack like this.

They also have bigger and cheaper ones.

If they have things like art supplies or things they don't use everyday, get under the bed storage containers for them.

In your room, try and condense you and your hubby's stuff into one dresser and the closet. If you put out of season clothes into storage, you will have more room.

Could you move your computer into the living or family room?  Otherwise get a small table for it and minimize the space it takes up as much as possible. Get a desk that has a place for the keyboard that rolls under the desk when not in use and has room for the computer thing to go under the desk.

Next to his dresser/changing table purchase a shelf/cubby system or have your hubby make one. Have a shelf for diapers, one for wipes/lotions/etc, and one for things like teethers/no-scratch mits/nail clipper/etc.

For extra diapers and blankets, etc., get under the bed storage bins to place under his crib.

For the laundry room, have hampers. One for kids lights, one for kids darks, one for baby, one for you and hubby lights, one for you and hubby darks, and one for all reds. Label them and have your kids put their clothes in the proper bin. If there is not enough room for all for those hampers, have one for kids, one for adults, and one for baby.

Get those stackable washer and dryers if you can afford it. Place shelves next to or above the washer/dryer for laundry detergent, dryer sheets, Oxy, etc.

In the bathroom, get a mirror/cabinet combo and a pedastol sink.

Purchase a shelf/cabinet system to go next to the sink or above the toilet. Also get hooks for towels on the back of the door.

In the living room, get rid of extra furniture, so it doesn't look crowded but so you have enough seating. Minimize end tables by adding shelving throughout. If toys are allowed out of their rooms, have baskets for them. Have magazine racks next to the couch.

In the kitchen have a rack for keys and mail.

Your best friends will be shelves and under the bed storage.

This stuff can be purchased at any stores like Pottery Barn or if you're on a budget Target.

Minimize clutter by getting rid of unused stuff. Donate all old clothes/toys/furniture to local thrift shop.

<<<<WHile you are organizing, have your hubby take them to the park or aske a neighbor/friend to babysit for a while.>>>>

  4. Sell your furniture --  that should give you some more room

  5. This sounds exactly like my house!!

Unfortunately whatever I do my kids don't stick to it!!

Good Luck I hope yours do.

  6. Now this will take time and effort and I understand I have a daughter with all kinds of horses, horse barnsand  barbies dolls and ect.....How about clear container with pictures of their toys or what ever you heart desires on the outside so your childerns will see what suppose go inside them? You can teach your kids they now have a special place for their things and this should work out for you also. I think if you had  family or friends, maybe you could take them there for a couple of hours  each week or if your husband can take them to the park for a while  this could help you get started but this will take some time. Good~luck! :o)
