Trying to plan Mexican trip. Please Help?

Hi,

My friend and I are planning to travel to Mexico (from either Ireland or the UK) via Upstate NY in November. We want to book a package to Mexico from NY but we don't know how to go about looking.

Does anyone know of any good U.S. based price comparison sites?

I've tried Expedia and it's really annoying me.

Has anyone any advice on travelling from NY (Rochester) to Mexico. Is it better to have a package or to book flights and accommodation separately?

We don't mind where we go in Mexico so long as its by the sea. The cheaper the better also.

Thanks

  1. I wouldn´t be able to give you any information on packages, but as I lived in Mexico for 4 years, I´d suggest this:

You book a flight from NY to Mexico City, stay some 4-5 days there and then go to Yucatan Peninsula.

There are regular flights from Mexico City to Merida (take Mexicana or Aero Mexico and strictly avoid Taesa which is not a safe airline) that is a really beautiful colonial style town nearby the Mexican Golf. Merida is worth staying a week or so being in the center of many important sites like Chichen-Itza and others.

For enjoying beaches I recommend Playa del Carmen, 70km south of Cancun or Cosumel, that is a beautiful island across Playa del Carmen.

In all above mentioned areas you´ll be able to find cheap (and good) food and accommodation.

As per beaches, you could also do Mazatlan and Acapulco, but that´s on Pacific and in my taste nothing compares to the Caribbean..

  2. i live in cancun, mexico and its great

bestday.com this guys have good prices in tours and hotels

  3. Your best bet is to get a package deal directly from the major airlines that serve Mexico:

    Continental

    American

    Aeromexico

    Delta

Getting a package trough Expedia or Travelocity will always include an overhead. I recomend Continental, i have been able to book fligth-hotel-car, directly trough them.

Since its your first time in Mexico, i recomend the more tourist friendly resorts, Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, Acapulco. for money saving, Acapulco on the pacific coast is your best bet.

  4. try apple vacations.com

  5. Please check www.cheaptickets.com    ..... I usually found there lower fares than expedia and travelocity. (They also have Packages flights+hotel)

In cheaptickets you may find flights to major international airports in Mexico like: Mexico City, Cancun, los Cabos, Puerto Vallarta, Guadalajara, Acapulco and so on.

You can search for a package in this webpage, and then compare the prices with the fares shown at the official airline and hotel webpages.....

Usually foreigners "do" the Riviera Maya Route (Cancun, Chichen Itza, Playa del Carmen, Xcaret, Xel Ha, Tulum, Holbox and Merida). All Inclusives may be very expensive, so, for a cheaper budget skip Cancun and stay in Playa del Carmen or Tulum (lots of small hotels and hostels close to the beach and the tourists zones)...

Hotel Kinbe Playa del Carmen, Cabañas La Ruina Playa del Carmen, Hotel Lunata, Hotel Mariachi, Hotel Barrio Latino and Hostel El Palomar are small cozy hotels right in the 5th Avenue (where everything happens in Playa del carmen) and just 1 block of the beach. (Range prices may be from USD$20 to USD$75 per night dependeing on the season). In Tulum you may find cheaper and more rustic cabains beside the sea......

For Cheap Meals just avoid restaurants in the 5th Avenue (just walk away a few blocks) and prices fall dramatically.

The Mayan Route offers Ancient Mayan Archeology, Great Caribbean Beaches, Top Restaurants, Bars and Clubs and a wide set of entertainment options to choose in a relatively small area.

Other Cheap Beach destination in Mexico may be "Riviera Nayarit" (Which is the Northern Beach of Puerto Vallarta and just beside the Luxury destination of Punta Mita)...there you may find small towns and you can also visit the city of Guadalajara (home of the Mariachi / 4 hour trip by bus) and the city of Tequila (home of the Tequila/ just in the way to Guadalajara).................. Anorther option is the Oaxaca Pacific Coast: Puerto Escondido, Zicatela, Zipolite and Mazunte are small surf towns that invites for a relaxing vacation. This beaches (as well as Tulum in the Caribbean) have been the destination for many hippies form all over the world, so the atmosphere is very relaxed and openminded (nudity is allowed in some beaches as Mazunte or Zipolite). If you choose Oaxaca Coast and want to see something more Mexican you can book a 5 hour trip (by bus) ti the Capital Oaxaca (lots of Colonial Buildings) and to the Archeological Sites of Monte Alban or Mitla (just outside Oaxaca City).

Another cheap trip throughout Mexico is the Colonial Route, which includes the most important and historic cities in the central mexico mountains like: Zacatecas, Guanajuato, Queretaro, San Miguel de Allende, Morelia, Mexico City and Puebla (no Beach destinations).

  6. Try "www.farecompare.com". They even can send you an alert when the price goes down. Also, look on the Aeromexico (www.aeromexico.com) amd Mexicana (www,mexicana.com) for their faresaver plans. We booked on Aermexico from JFK and then used Jet Blue to fly into JFK. Had to do this separately, but saved $300 from the next lowest price available. Of course, we go to Puerto Vallarta, the best and most happening city (and very safe) in Mexico.

Remember that the Pacific side does not have the white sand and clear blue waters of the Carribbean side. Also, some resorts like Cancun and Cabo are set up only for tourists from the USA and you do not get to enjoy the wonderful people and places of Mexico.

Also, www.kayak.com shows a wide range of sites including orbitz and expedia.
