  3. Call a reporter for the local newspaper. THey do articles on local businesses in the Saturday paper when news is slow.  If that works, offer to go on the local tv morning show at 6am when they need any story they can get.

    Entrepreneur.com has some excellent information about marketing. There are articles such as: 23 Hours to a Great Marketing Plan, 33 Tips for Marketing Success, Get PR for your New Business, 5 Key Ways to Build Customer Relationships to name a few.  You can even print them out.  A lot of the suggestions are low cost/free.

    Go to Chamber of Commerce meetings in your area.  You can usually go as a guest to check out the organization and this gives you some contact with other business owners.  The one I go to does not pressure you to join and welcomes everyone.  It has been the best source of ideas and help.  There is also some automatic networking before and after the meeting. When my confidence is failing, I get a little boost just hearing about the struggles and success of the other business owners.

    Even on a shoestring you need to look professional and successful.  Buy the best quality business cards and stationary you can afford.  If you use flyers to advertise print them on good quality paper.  It gives the impression you care and are serious about your business.

    Finally, no matter what your business is...have you contacted everyone you know and asked them for help either referring people to you for your service, handing out business cards, passing out flyers etc?  My dentist ended up referring a bunch of people to me after I told him what I was doing while I was in getting my teeth cleaned.

    You never know who knows someone who knows someone who needs your service/product! And, I have found that people really genuinely want to help other people succeed.  Good Luck!

  9. All really depends on what sort of business you wish to promote You could advertise in your local shops put an advert in your car window for free. Print a poster and put it in the Public Library.  Ask some of the in town news agents to put a post up for you. and of course make an internet site for your business.
