  1. Visit the local library or book store.  Make sure you have plenty of time to spend browsing.  Go up and down every aisle, and choose books that appeal to you.  It might be books about a certain animal (such as owls), place (such as China), time in history (such as the Egyptians), hobby (such as photography), science (such as astronomy), language (such as Latin), person (such as Ghandi)etc...whatever appeals to you.

You will learn a lot, including improving your reading skills, comprehension and vocabulary.  You will WANT to learn because it is a subject that interests you.

Also, look into your local community colleges or traditional universities.  Most have classes that you can take out of interest, without being a degree seeking student.  Request a catalog of courses, and browse through them to see what might interest you-it might be something similar to the books that interested you, or it might be something such as Probability and Statistics.

Visit places in your community, and if you can-travel.  So much is learned through experience, and is better retained than just reading about it.  Visit art galleries, history museums, the aquarium or zoo.  Visit factories that offer tours, historical sites such as plantations.

Knowledge need not come from school.  Do not limit yourself.  The choices are nearly endless.

I hope this helps, and wish you the best!

  2. I was once told by a uni tutor that the very best thing anyone can do to educate themselves is to take and read a good quality newspaper each day.

If your primary aim is to learn more about the world, I'd go with history, politics, economics and possibly some world literature for a start; geography if you're interested in the natural world; and maybe some science - physics is probably the closest to explaining all about 'how the world works'. Then there's the natural sciences such as astronomy, meteorology, agronomy etc, as well as animal science.

As well as everyone else's suggestions, you might also want to take a look at: http://www.open.ac.uk/openlearn/home.php...

  3. First off, good for you for taking an interest in your own knowledge.  I too didn't find learning fun until well after my secondary education.  As far as learning goes, I guess that depends on what it is you plan to do with yourself.  Are you planning on returning to school?  If so, once you begin your studies, you will probably find something that fascinates you.  Go with it.  I learned that once I began at the university, I disovered a love of language and government.

If you don't plan to return to school, check out you local library.  Browse the shelves, You'll definitely find something to read and learn.  Good luck!

  4. Depends what subjects particularly interest you.  There is such a wealth of information in libraries or on the net.

Start simple and follow up something that you want to know about.  That will lead you on to more.

Try not to flit too much from one subject to another, but learn as much as you can in one area, before going to another.

It is easy to improve language skills via the net, if you are interested at all in that.  The BBC have many different courses available free.

    All the best!

  5. Geography, (always fun, looking for adventures-holidays) and World History.  I would look into politics, only because it involves you daily (even if you don't think so).

  6. MIT has free classes called open courseware. Give it a shot!

    Best of Luck!
