Trying to text my boyfriend but it wont work !?

Question

so i just started going out with my boyfriend and we had to go so he could only give his number to me. so he doesnt have mine. so im trying to text him but when i text him this automatic message comes and says Error Invalid Number. Please re-send using a valid 10 digit number or valid short code ( and then it showed my message ). i know this is his number but why wont it work ? i feel bad because i dont want him to think i dont like him because im not talking to him. so why wont it work ? his number starts with a 1 making it 11 digits but then i took the 1 away and it send me the same message ! please help !

this was happening to me and i'm guessing he doesn't have text messaging on his phone that's y my phone would say that about my friends cell if he des have text messaging then call him his phone might be disconnected

are u in the us ???

because i know here u sometimes have to put +61 instead of the first two numbers which is here is 04 so instead of 040834..... its +610834....  dunno if that helps best of luck
