Tryout session: Buffalo Bills not keen in giving second chance to safety Jim Leonhard – NFL News
A breakthrough for a potential deal between free-agent safety Jim Leonhard and Buffalo Bills could not be made and the player returns empty-handed to the next the stop, the Denver Broncos, for a tryout session.
Jim spent a couple of days at the Bills’ headquarters, giving physical and try workout, which apparently was not watched by coach Chan Gailey and general manager Buddy Nix
A section of media has quoted anonymous sources disclosing that the process of talk around the potential deal could not be initiated between the player’s agent and the team even though the safety was at the team’s headquarters for complete two days.
The impasse is apparently not understandable given Nix had expressed a desire to add an experienced safety to the squad during training camp. This was the reason that the player was at the camp.
Chan has expressed ignorance to the development of the matter, saying he did not watch the tryout session. As reflective in the coach’s remarks, he left the entire matter to be handled by the GM, who on his part is equally loath about it.
Jim is available on the free-agency market since this offseason after his release by the New York Jets, where he spent the most successful three years of his seven-year pro career. He was very popular among the Jets’ fans and the team’s decision of not re-signing
him on expiry of his previous contract baffled many.
Earlier, the player had been linked to potential move to a number of sides, but no concrete development had taken place in this regard. It was greatly hopped that the Bills will land him a contract straightaway given the team is in need of a safety and the
veteran comes as a right solution to it.
After being dejected by the team, the safety is due to work out for the Broncos this week. There is no information if the team has a genuine need for a safety, but some commentators are hopeful of the player getting an opportunity in Denver.
It is pertinent to note that Jim has already played with Bills for three years after starting the pro career from Buffalo. This was also seen a factor expected to contribute to re-landing of the player in the city, but the Bills could not make up their mind
this time, for unknown reasons.
