Tsonga crushes Berrer, Wawrinka upset by Ward in the second round – AEGON Championships 2011
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga ousts Michael Berrer 6-0, 6-1
French Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, ranked 19th in the world, humiliated world number 79 Michael Berrer of Germany in straight sets in the second round of AEGON Championships at the Queen’s Club in London on Tuesday. Tsonga lost
only one game in the entire match, winning a one-sided contest 6-0, 6-1 in just 47 minutes.
The Frenchman was flawless in the first set as he did not allow Berrer to win even a single game, breaking him thrice and grabbing the set 6-0. The 26-year-old hit three aces and kept his first serve percentage at 55 percent, winning
82 percent of the points on the first serve in the first set. In comparison, Berrer served poorly as he managed to deliver just 39 percent of the first serves, claiming a meagre 29 percent of the points on them in the opening set.
In the second set, Berrer held his serve in the second game to win his first game of the match. After that, Tsonga claimed five consecutive games, breaking the German twice and bagging the set 6-1. The six feet and two inches tall
fired three aces but committed the same number of double faults in the second set. The right-handed capitalised on both break point opportunities he created on the 30-year-old’s serve and did not face any break point on his own serve in the second set.
Tsonga is slated to play compatriot Michael Llodra, seeded tenth at the event, in the round of 16.
James Ward defeats Stanislas Wawrinka 7-6(3), 6-3
Great Britain’s wild card entrant James Ward, ranked 216th in the world, made the biggest upset of the tournament so far as he ousted world number 14 and fourth seed Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland in straight sets
7-6(3), 6-3 to advance to the round of 16. It took the Brit one hour and seventeen minutes to undo his opponent.
Ward and Wawrinka failed to break each other in the first set and levelled the score at 6-6, forcing a tie-break. The Brit dominated the tie-break and claimed three mini-breaks to claim it 7-3. The six feet and three inches tall
hit four aces and 61 percent of the first serves, clinching amazingly 100 percent of the points on them in the opening set.
After winning a tough first set, Ward took control of the match as he broke the Swiss in the second game of the second set to blaze forward to a 3-0 lead. The right-handed maintained his lead throughout the set, winning it 6-3.
The 24-year-old converted one of the six break points he received on Wawrinka’s serve and succeeded in saving all the three break points on his own serve in the second set.
Ward will face defending champion Sam Querrey, seeded thirteenth at the event, in the third round.
