Tsonga survives second round scare at Wimbledon
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga blew a 2-0 lead against Alexandr Dolgopolov to turn what should have been a routine victory into a five-set struggle on day four at Wimbledon.
The tenth seed eventually wrapped up what in light of the epic 10-plus hour (and counting) match between John Isner and Nicolas Mahut can only be described as a mini-marathon with a 6-4, 6-4, 6-7(5), 5-7, 10-8 scoreline.
In the end it took three hours and 55 minutes for Tsonga to book his place in the third round, where 128th ranked Tobias Kamke awaits.
If Tsonga can win that one, and the disparity in rankings indicates he should, he will equal his best performance at the All England Club, which he achieved in 2007.
While Tsonga’s second round match went the distance, French counterpart Gilles Simon has moved through to the third round courtesy of a walkover against Illya Marchenko, and will be fresh to face fourth seed Andy Murray when he returns to the court for his next match.
