Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, will feature eight players from the women tennis association top ranks to feature in the maiden staging of the premier event on that soil. Qatar Airways will sponsor the championship according to
the recent declaration made by the Bulgarian Tennis federation and the event is scheduled to kick-off on 30th October and last until the 4th of November.
Women Tennis Association’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Stacey Allaster stated, “We are thrilled that Qatar Airways has signed up as title sponsor of the Tournament of Champions. Qatar Airways is a truly world class airline
with a wonderful history of support for professional tennis, including the Qatar Ladies Open, our WTA Premier event in Doha.” She also congratulated the Bulgarian Tennis Federation for hosting the first ever premier event of the Women Tennis Association on
their soil.
The eight players that will feature in the event include the likes of the Bulgarian superstar, Tsvetana Pironkova, who will also be the heartthrob of local fans and will be cheered all along the tournament. Number one Bulgarian
superstar, Tsvetana Pironkova confessed, “I am very proud to have this chance to play at such a prestigious event in front of my home fans. This is why I play tennis - to compete and give my best on the big stages. I am also looking forward to welcoming some
of my WTA colleagues and friends to Bulgaria.” Pironkova is awarded the wildcard entry into the tournament.
Other player that already confirmed her participation in the tournament is the 15th ranked Russian superstar, Maria Kirilenko. She announced her partaking in the event earlier this week. The 25-year-old Russian is looking
ahead to make a strong impact in the event. She seeks a good response from the fans in Sofia and also thanked the Bulgarian Tennis Federation for allotting her the wildcard to participate in the first ever premier Women Tennis Association event staging in
Sofia.
The total prize money of the Women Tennis Association tournament in Sofia is listed to be $750,000 and it will be the last event that will be contested in the current season; asking for players to give their best shot before they
go on a long weekend. The tournament will feature highest-ranked winners of International series events through the year excluding those who will be contesting for the season-end finale in Istanbul. Sofia is scheduled to host this particular event until 2014.
