Tsvetana Pironkova beats Camila Giorgi in the opening round – Wimbledon Championships 2011
It was a very successful Tuesday afternoon for the world number 33, Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria as she reached the second round of Wimbledon Championships for the third
time in her career. She entered the round of 64 at the Wimbledon Championships after her Italian opponent Camila Giorgi lost the match with a 2-6, 1-6 score line.
The 23-year-old Bulgarian looked determined, served exceptionally well and produced the right balance of attack to seal the match in just 54 minutes. Italian’s solid game
looked completely messy against the Bulgarian and she was no better in this match with Pironkova. It looked like the Italian number ten had lost trust in her shots and looked totally scared to go for her two-handed backhands against the Bulgarian. Performing
very badly and displaying a below par game, Giorgi completely disappointed her fans as she failed to progress to the second round of this prestigious tournament.
Pironkova, expectedly, was more aggressive from the start of the match and she had the answers at almost every turn, making the Italian opponent run for her money. The Bulgarian
broke to lead 2-1 and was never troubled en route to the second set. The world number 33 did not muster any break point opportunity, a static that was clear proof to Pironkova’s brutal serving display.
Losing her enthusiasm in the first set of the match, Giorgi could not pose any major threat to the Bulgarian number one and allowed her to take the second set with a breadstick
win. Pironkova seemed to hold her serve with more comfort and started to slice and dice Giorgi with her witty game. With the British crowd cheering her on, Pironkova fired down un-returnable serve after serve to seal a precious win, and one that sets her up
perfectly for progressing to the second round at the Wimbledon.
With this win, the Bulgarian has refined her year-to-date win-loss mark to 7-15 matches and now marches on into the second round where she will battle against either America’s
Vania King or Croatia’s Petra Martic.
