Tsvetana Pironkova defeats Maria-Teresa Torro-Floro in the first round of the Andalucia Tennis Experience
World number 36 Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria rarely had a difficulty in overcoming the Spanish qualifier, Maria-Teresa Torro-Floro in the opening round match of the Andalucia Tennis Experience at Marbella, Spain. The fifth seed Bulgarian blew away her
bleak opponent in straight sets 6-2, 6-2, taking just 74 minutes of play on Tuesday, April 5.
The Spanish qualifier proved no real match to Pironkova, who showed sheer domination from the very first minute of play. Although the Bulgarian had a poor serve game, she excelled over her rival with her amazing ability to collect points throughout the contest.
She registered six break points en route to her fifth victory of the year, while her opponent followed her with a mere two.
The Spaniard served amazingly with almost 90 per cent accuracy but only collected 11 out of 27 total serve points in the opening set. Despite of a drastically low first serve of just 41 per cent, Pironkova nabbed 8 of 11 first serve points to have a clear
edge over her opponent.
The 23-year-old Bulgarian broke in the second game of the opener to move to 3-0 and exert early pressure upon Torro-Flor. She further crafted double break point in the fourth game and converted the first chance to extend her astounding lead to 4-0. The 18-year-old
Spaniard finally cracked a serve break in the sixth game and held her serve to cut the deficit to 2-5 but Pironkova converted the last of the three set points to seal the first set at 6-2.
The Bulgarian dominance continued in the second set as well, with Pironkova breaking serve twice and reeling off four straight games to get a 4-0 lead. The Spanish teenager broke Pironkova’s winning momentum in the fifth game by inflicting a serve break
and then held serve to take the scores to 2-4.
Pironkova’s aggressive tennis earned her first match point at 5-2, which she successfully converted to ensure victory. The Bulgarian will be playing against the winner of the match between the Russian wildcard Dinara Safina and Arantxa Rus of Netherlands,
in the second round at Marbella.
