Tsz Ka Chan beats Rena Wang in the qualifying round of the All England Open Badminton Championships
Hong Kong’s Tsz Ka Chan defeated Rena Wang of USA in the qualifying round of women’s singles in the All England Open Badminton Championships 2011, today at Birmingham, England. This event is the second leg of the five Premier Super Series events of the year
2011. Chan took 44 minutes to defeat the opponent in a three set thrilling battle and booked her place in the main round of the draw, which will be played in the afternoon today on March 9, 2011.
In the opening set of the qualifying round match, the shuttler of Hong Kong showed no mercy to Rena. Chan established a quick lead of 11-4 in the opening half of the first set. The American was clearly lacking speed and struggled hard to return the shuttle
c**k driven from the racquet of her opponent. Right after the interval, Chan progressed quickly and finished the opening game by a stunning margin of 21-9 in just 12 minutes.
In the second game, Rena grabbed the attention of the crowd by delivering a wonderful performance against the Hong Kong lady. In the starting points of the second set, the American player matched the speed of the opponent and levelled the score at 10-10.
Rena was leading the game by 11-10 till the one-minute break.
After the break, both players progressed closely and the score reached at 16-16. At this crucial stage of the game, it was the American lady who dominated the game and won the set with a three-point difference of 21-18 in 16 minutes.
The final set of the battle was again a good fight as both shuttlers were competing with the same pace and quality of the game. Chan took a four-point lead at 11-7 and maintained it in the entire set. She utilized her experience and controlled the pace of
the rallies by playing spinning net shots.
Rena had no answer to the tumbling net strokes of the opponent and on several occasions could not even return the bird to the opponent. Chan won the final set in 16 minutes with a 21-15 score on the board. The final score of the match was, 21-19, 18-21 and
21-15.
