  1. amps back in the day used tubes greats like frampton, hendrix and billy gibbons all used them tubes create what is known as a "warmer" sound than thier current digital counterparts the sound coming from them has a distinct quality that as of yet no cheap digital amp can emulate. Tube amps are also priced acordingly and cost significantly more than thier digital counterparts. If your just starting skip the tubed amp for now as you probably will need practice before the merits of a tube amp will really shine for you.

  2. A tube is a device designed to amplify the signal, if it isn't a tube amp then it will be another device to amplify the signal, ie Transistor or IC (integrated circuit)

The tube is an earlier technology but is still used today because of the warm tone and clarity that some people prefer over the transistor.

Better is subjective, I love the sound of a tube amp but I don't miss the weight!
