  1. I live in the Tulsa area and the number of restaurants is phenomenal.  You go to almost any restaurant on a weekday at noon and the place will be packed.  The restaurants that don't seem to make it are the ones with a limited menu and/or high prices.  Opening a Mexican restaurant is almost a guaranteed success.  Asian cooking is also popular.

Within two miles of my home (I live in the suburbs on the edge of Tulsa) there are 8 Chinese restaurants: Yummy Buffet, No1 Kitchen, Happy House, Peking Garden, Eggroll Street, Eggroll Express, China Star Buffet and No1China.

In addition, within 2-3 miles in different directions are 2 steak houses, 3 diners, 2 Arbys, 2 Mazzios, 2 Braums, Taco Bell, Taco Bueno, Waffle House, Panera's, 2 Italian restaurants, Pizza Hut, Papa John's and 2 other pizza places, Dominos, an Irish pub/grill, Burger King, 2 McDonalds, Carl Jr, Backyard Burgers,  Church's Chicken, Charlie's Chicken, Long John Silvers, 2 BBQ places, Applebees, several Mexican restaurants, Goldys, a couple of sandwich shops, 2 Bill & Ruths subs, and more that I can't remember.  No kidding!

There are even more in Tulsa proper.  Making up your mind on where to eat is a major decision because of all the choices!

Now that I have written this all out, I am totally amazed!  So to answer your question Yes, Tulsa is the restaurant capital of the Midwest.

  2. I think it is entirely a midwest thing.

I had heard that Wichita, KS and Tulsa were both the restaurant kings. More eateries than you can throw stick at! But yes, I think if you can make it in either of these two cities you are golden wherever else you open up!!!
