Tunisia continues successful run at African Men’s Qualification Tournament – Volleyball news
African Championship bronze medallist Tunisia is one of the five teams that are competing for the Olympic berth in Cameroon.
The qualification tournament for the Olympic ticket is running from January 17 to 21. So far, Tunisia is the only team in the competition without any loss. Tunisia appeared in two matches and grabbed success in both contests. The team is geared up to earn
the right to represent Africa in upcoming Olympic Games in London.
Tunisia opened the tournament in a great style and detracted the African champion Egypt in the first match on Tuesday, January 17. The city of Yaoundé in Cameroon hosted the match, while Tunisia earned the winning status by sending 3-1 (25-23, 16-25, 29-27,
25-23) on board.
In the first match of African Olympic Qualifying Tournament, the outside hitter Marouen Garci led Tunisian team to a memorable victory. He displayed his amazing skills on the centre court and added 18 points. He was central to Tunisia’s success in the match.
On account of his brilliant act, Garci was named as the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the match.
Egypt relied on big gun Saleh Fathy, who was the best spiker at the 2011 FIVB Volleyball Men's World Cup, but the team failed to overcome the North African rivals.
Tunisia did not any match on Wednesday, which gave a good chance of rest to the players. The charged up Tunisian team returned to action on the third day of the tournament. The team was challenged by underdogs Ghana in the second match.
Hence, it needed little effort to down the opponent in 59 minutes. The set scores of the Tunisia’s second match were 25-22, 25-13, 25-21. It was second straight win for Tunisia, which improved their winning record to 2-0.
In the second match, Elyes Karamosly enjoyed the spotlight as the added match high 17 points in Tunisia’s score.
The opening set of the match featured a balanced action as Ghana stayed put in the match. The players showed good energy and engaged the Tunisia players in a close competition. Nevertheless, Tunisia seized first set win with a lead of three points and then
started the heavy strike of volleys in the following set. Ghana’s performance promptly faltered and they suffered the loss of second set in row with relatively big margin, 13-25.
Tunisia kept the ball rolling at same velocity and declared match victory by winning third set. In the next run, Tunisia is scheduled to take on Algeria on Friday, January 20. Tunisian team has created a lot of buzz with two victories in row. Team is enjoying
a top form and hopes to continue with their winning ways.
