Tunisia scored victory over Rwanda at the African Nations Women’s Volleyball Tournament
In the recent memory, Tunisia hosted the stunning volleyball action at the courts of Tunis. The 13th Women’s Junior African Nations Volleyball Championship was conducted from 14-19 October 2010 with all the flavours of amusement. Tunisia played
with one team, which was joined by other challengers from Algeria, Rwanda, Cote d’Ivoire and Egypt. The five teams contested their power of arms against each other and fought for better status.
The teams took a day off on Sunday and got a break from the usual run of the championship. The activity was commenced on Tuesday, October 18 and two matches were played. In the first match, powerhouse Egypt defeated underdogs Cote d’Ivoire, while home-team
Tunisia was put up with Rwanda. Tunisian ladies saved their repute in front of local fans and defeated Rwanda with a score of 3-1 (25-19, 23-25, 25-19, and 25-19). The Rwandan team couldn’t break the winning streak of Tunisia and suffered the loss of an important
match. Tunisia qualified for the final match with Egypt.
The match was opened with a strong serve from Tunisian side. Fire ignited as the Rwandan team was ready to take the challenge. They tackled the powerful serves and returned the ball in Tunisia’s court. The fans raised their voices and chanted happy slogans.
Things kicked off in a great way and Tunisia picked up pace in the game. The hitters put away nice shots and bagged early points. The Team Rwanda was equally active and defended its position. Somehow, Tunisian squad found the rare gaps in opponents’ court
and guided the ball in targeted areas. They earned points and continued with attack.
Rwanda had a good offensive combination and attacked Tunisian side with a variety of shots. They produced good spikes and helped their score but Tunisia was ahead in the game. The first set covered half of its length and both teams seemed pretty consistent
in their approach. Tunisia led the score with a useful lead of 2 points. The first set slightly inched to the second technical timeout and Tunisia tried to put pressure on Rwanda. They hit a couple of nice shots and poked the ball over the net with great technique
of their hands. Rwanda ultimately fell back and lost the first set at 25-19.
The victory in first set put more thrill in the Tunisian play. They continued with confident serves and point-scoring spikes. Rwandan team was all up for proving their effort against Tunisia. They covered every single spot in the court and attacked the other
side with best of their spikers. Nonetheless, the experienced Tunisian defenders took their unique receiving positions and handled the speedy under-hand shots. The score soared up with a close difference. Tunisia was aware of the prompt reaction of Rwandan
team after the loss of first set, so they were mentally and physically prepared to hold them under their hand. The see-saw battle continued for the better part of the second set. Tunisia was able to stretch the score to set point and got their hands on the
final kills, which ended the second set at 25-23.
Despite of putting so much effort and trying many different approaches, Rwanda couldn’t’ come out of blues. The loss of two sets didn’t get them down but put more courage in their hearts and they struggled to change the scenario. Rwandan team killed off
important points by good service and strong spikes. Even Tunisia had to acknowledge their effort and give way to Rwanda’s 25-19 victory in third set.
The Rwandan team felt good about triumph in third set but happiness was short-lived. Tunisia came back strong in the fourth set and dominated the whole scene. They didn’t allow Rwanda’s team to repeat the score. Tunisia pulled off 25-19 victory in fourth
set and pushed Rwanda out of the game. The brilliant win of Tunisia enabled them to play in the final show-down of African Nations Championship with Egypt on Tuesday.
