Tunisia topples Egypt by 3-2 in Pool A: FIVB Volleyball Women’s Junior World Championship
In a Pool A match of the FIVB Volleyball Women’s Junior World Championship that is currently taking place in Peru, the Tunisian and Egyptian teams contested each other on Sunday, July 24, in Trujillo. What followed was an intense battle between two traditional
rivals that went on for five thrilling sets at the end of which Tunisia was able to emerge as victors at 3-2.
The first set of the game was the most aggressive as both teams were looking to dominate. However, the Tunisian side was able to win the opening set as well as the second. The Egyptians tied the match and took the game to a decisive fifth by winning the
third and the fourth sets. The fifth set of the game had all the ingredients of a classic final set that the Tunisians managed to win at 26-24, 25-22, 21-25, 20-25, 17-15.
The Tunisian head coach made the following comments in the post match interview: “I think that both teams have the same level, we were nervous at the beginning, we tried to stay the longest in the match and our players and I had good luck. We have to make
a lot of changes I’m not satisfied with the development of our game style”
On the other hand, the Egyptian coach, Mohamed Ahmed, gave the following statement: “We tried to give a good game. The game was even despite that a couple of our main players got injured yesterday, thing that obviously had something to do with us loosing
the match”
The opening set of the match went back and forth between the two teams because the squads kept on committing errors. No one was sure where the tables would turn until the Tunisian player, Dridi Feriel, won the first set of the game for his team by executing
a service ace.
The win gave the Tunisian side the confidence they needed and started the second set by taking a lead at 9-1. However, the Egyptians were not about to give up just yet and proved it by tying the set at 15-15. As the set reached its close, Tunisia was able
to end it at 25-22.
Playing with a loss of two sets, the Egyptian team was able to rally together and step up their game in the third set of the match. They were able to stay ahead of the Tunisian squad by as much as five points. Eventually, the Egyptians managed to bag a win
at 25-21.
Capitalising on the momentum generated by winning the third set of the game, the Egyptians were able to take the lead at the start of the fourth set by eight points that turned into another win at 25-20.
The fifth set saw a fierce battle between the two teams at the end of which Tunisia proved to be the better side by winning it at 17-15.
The two Pool A teams that will be advancing into the next round are Peru and Slovakia while Tunisia and Egypt will stay in Trujillo.
