why are lights in tunnels orange

  1. They're Sodium-Vapor lamps, that are brighter and more efficient than Mercury Vapor (blue-ish green-ish light), flourescent or incandescent.

    Sodium-Vapor lamps naturally give out orange light. In NYC most streetlights are Sodium-Vapor. They used to be Mercury-Vapor, you still see Mercury-Vapor in some suburbs.


  2. because their more visible than clear ones would be,and last longer because of the design of them,and they don't instantly blind you when you enter the tunnel,bright lights in a tunnel would cause problems when you came out the other side,it would be like going from dark to light all the sudden,good luck.

  3. because the covers are tinted
