Turallure bested Courageous Cat and Right One in a heart pounding finish to win the $1million Woodbine Mile
Turallure’s scintillating late run ensured his victory in the Grade 1 $1,025,981 Ricoh Woodbine Mile which added to the drama in the heart pounding finish to the Woodbine feature race on 18 September, 2011.
The Charles Lopresti trainee, Turallure, is the son of Wando, who went on to win the Canadian Triple Crown back in 2003, and now his son carries on in his footsteps to hit the wire first in his Woodbine debut.
Winning wasn’t the only upside to Turallure’s late emphatic run, it is also the satisfaction his connections got when their 4-year-old colt nailed the favoured Courageous Cat after he stormed down the outside.
It was a thrilling three horse finish in the end, with Right One being the second victim of Turallure’s frightening run on the outside.
Out of Personal Allure by Wekiva Springs, Turallure earned himself an automatic berth in the Grade 1 $2million Breeders’ Cup Mile over the Churchill Downs turf on 5 November, 2011, as part of the Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” series.
Confidently handled by jockey Julien Leparoux, Turallure was the last one leaving the turn on a Woodbine course which was labelled as firm.
The Grade 2 Sky Classic winner, Kara’s Orientation was quick to get out of the gate, and straight away got to his pace setting duties, as Woodbourne and Courageous Cat followed him in second and third respectively.
After rounding off the bend, Kara’s Orientation gave way to Courageous Cat, as the 5-year-old bay colt assumed the lead going for the home stretch.
Hollinger, Side Glance and Riding the River took up the chase as Woodbourne wilted right after Courageous Cat got anxious to go.
Turallure toiled along the rail, and got blocked in the process but still had much to do before he could even challenge the leader.
Julien Leparoux wanted a little day light when he got blocked out, and when he did, the crafty jockey outwitted everyone to thread Turallure clear from his rivals on the outside and just behind the leaders.
The mowing down began, with nothing but open space in front of him, Turallure sized up his rivals and went all out in search for a winner as he ran down the French bred Right One and hit the wire an instant ahead of Courageous Cat. The winning time was 1
minute and 34.92 seconds.
Turallure won his third race in his sixth start this season, and became the sixth Kentucky bred runner to win the Woodbine Mile. He dramatically upped his earnings to $907,465 after receiving his winner’s share of $613,380.
