Turbo Compressor picks up a stakes race for trainer Todd Pletcher in the Curlin Stakes at Saratoga
Todd Pletcher trained 3-year-old colt, Turbo Compressor, amasses his foes and trainer after a win in the $75,000 Curlin Stakes at the wet Saratoga track on 29 July, 2011.
Turbo Compressor is trained by Todd Pletcher for owners, Off the Hook Racing and P and G Stable. He is the son of Halo’s Image out of Dixieland Event by Wild Event.
The 3-year-old colt was allowed to set a neutral pace under jockey Javier Castellano throughout the race and did not get much challenge from his foes, even 1 furlong out when he was 3 lengths away from his closest rival, Raison d’Etat.
The winner was en route to a 2 ¾ length victory over Raison d’Etat. The pair broke well from the gates and almost immediately assumed the leader’s position.
With loose competition it was a one paced race and, no one attempted to challenge Turbo Compressor, who didn’t even have to go in to trubo to win the race.
To be fair it was a damp track, but J Castellano realised the situation that he is not going to get a tough race so he deliberately slowed the pace down and the opening quarter went down to 24.70 seconds.
Eddie Castro rode Raison d’Etat, who remained within striking distance of Turbo Compressor but was kept a little wide.
The pair finally let go of the slow approach and bid their final assault, but the pace was already slow and it gave Turbo Compressor and J Castellano enough in reserve to fend off any challenge from anyone at the dying moments of the race.
Eddie Castro went excessive with the whipping but to no avail. He was able to gain distance from the third horse, Prime Cut, who kept tailing the leaders throughout the race.
The 5 ¼ length advantage over Prime Cut assures that Raison d’Etat had a good race, but the early paces earned by Turbo Compressor helped him a lot at the end.
Turbo Compressor, prior to the Curlin Stakes win, had two other wins.
The first when he broke his maiden at Gulfstream Park dirt course under jockey J Alvarez on 20 March, 2011. It was his second attempt at the maiden race and he successfully got it out of the way.
His second win came in the Allowance claimer race at Monmouth Park dirt course under jockey J Bravo, who guided the colt over at a distance of 1 1/16 miles on 14 May, 2011.
The next in line for the Todd Pletcher trained horse is the Grade 1 Travers Stakes at Saratoga on 27 August, 2011.
