Turbulent Descent fastest at four furlongs at Belmont Park ahead of Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint
Derrick Smith, Mrs John 'Susan' Magnier , and Michael B. Tabor’s 4-year-old filly, Turbulent Descent turned in a lively breeze ahead of her Breeders’ Cup race, the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint, on a bus day at Belmont Park.
Turbulent Descent was one of the horses, who are potential starters in Breeders’ Cup World Championship race 2-3 November at Santa Anita Park.
Todd Pletcher trained filly worked in company with Ciao Bella, and without much urging turned in four furlongs in 47.12 seconds. She earned a bullet, and her work was the fastest out of 67 at the distance.
Bred in Florida by Ocala Stud Farms, Turbulent Descent is exiting a fourth place finish in the Grade 2 Gallant Bloom Stakes at Belmont Park over six and one-half furlongs to winner, Dust and Diamonds, on 22 September, 2012.
“We weren’t really asking her for it but it sort of unfolded that way,” trainer Todd Pletcher said of the quick breeze. “They went off in 24 and finished in 23. It didn’t look like they were going that fast but they did.
“It’s a positive sign for her,” Pletcher added. “She just kind of does what her workmate does and doesn’t put a tremendous amount of effort into her daily routine. So that was a lively breeze and might be a step in the right direction.”
Prior to the Gallant Bloom Stakes, the 4-year-old filly by Congrats put together a 2-race win streak, which started by winning the Desert Stormer Stakes over 6 furlongs at the Betfair Hollywood Park’s cushion track on 17 June, 2012.
She moved to Saratoga, and extended her 2012 unbeaten run by winning the Grade 1 Ballerina Stakes over the Spa’s dirt course. Out of Forestry mare Roger’s Sue, Turbulent Descent went on to defeat Derwin’s Star in second and All Due Respect in third with
the winning time of 1 minute and 22.13 seconds going at seven furlongs.
As a sophomore, Turbulent Descent won the Grade 1 Santa Anita Oaks, Grade 2 Beaumont Stakes, and the Grade 1 Test Stakes. In the 2011 edition of the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint, she finished fifth and capped off the season with the 6th
place finish in the Grade 1 La Brea Stakes.
