Turbulent Descent successful in her seasonal debut
The 4-year-old Blinkers On Racing Stable owned filly, Turbulent Descent, has stayed idle since racing on the last New Year’s even in the Grade 1 La Brea Stakes at Santa Anita Park only to finish a dismal 6th on the day to winner, Teddy’s Promise.
However, trainer Mike Puype chose the right time to run Turbulent Descent, and the right place for her seasonal debut where she has never lost before, and the filly maintained her unbeaten run over the Betfair Hollywood Park’s cushion track when she romped past her adversaries to win the $72,570 Desert Stormer Handicap on 17 June, 2012.
The Congrats filly downed her fourth win over the cushion track in as many starts, as she was sent as the 3 to 2 favourite to win the Desert Stormer Handicap against five older fillies and mares.
Ridden by jockey David Flores her entire career, Turbulent Descent was reunited with her regular jockey after the long lay-off and together the duo started off well, but chose to stay several lengths off the pace setter, Izzy Rules.
Bred in Florida, Turbulent Descent sized up the distance and under some left handed encouragement; she went for it, as Izzy Rules posted swift fractions in the six furlong event.
Within striking distance, Turbulent Descent overtook Izzy Rules and took a stronghold of the race as she prevailed to down Izzy Rules by 1 ¼ lengths and complete the six furlong event in 1 minute and 9.25 seconds.
“You want to see her come back to form because she’s a brilliant filly,’’ said Puype. “Her campaign (in 2011) took its toll with four travel trips. She’s very partial to synthetic tracks and I’m just happy to have her back in form.’’
Out of Forestry mare Roger’s Sue, Turbulent Descent last won a race at Saratoga, when he downed the Grade 1 Test Stakes over a distance of seven furlongs on 6 August, 2011, where she downed the likes of Pomeroys Pistol in second and Roman Treasure in third with the winning time of 1 minute and 24.17 seconds.
The filly lost two starts in a row with unplaced finishes to cap off the 2011 season.
