Turbulent Descent will redeem herself in the La Break Stakes says trainer Mike Puype
Up till November the 3-year-old filly, Turbulent Descent, hadn’t finished worse than second in her lightly raced juvenile season and her full blown sophomore season, but when she entered the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint field, she experienced
what it feels to finish off the board in a star studded field.
Blinkers on Racing Stable’s Turbulent Descent is no short of a star herself, with three grade 1 victories under her belt, Turbulent Descent has been one fine filly throughout her career for trainer Mike Puype.
Prior to the Breeders’ Cup, Turbulent Descent was exiting a victory in the Grade 1 Test Stakes at Saratoga on 6 August, 2011, where she defeated t he likes of Pomeroys Pistol in second and Roman Treasure in third, while covering the seven furlong distance
in 1 minute and 24.17 seconds under jockey David Flores, who has ridden Turbulent Descent in all her career starts.
The Florida bred daughter of Congrats, out of mare Roger’s Sue by Forestry, Turbulent Descent will be looking to extend her grade 1 winning tally to four when she starts in the Grade 1, $300,000 La Brea Stakes against eight opponents as a heavy favourite
to win the race.
La Brea Stakes will be run over a distance of seven furlongs on dirt at Santa Anita Park on 31 December, 2011, a race that is exclusive for 3-year-old fillies.
Her loss in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint cost her the Eclipse Award for being the outstanding filly in the country after being sent as the 7 to 5 choice.
She took a narrow lead in the stretch, but gave way to lose the race by 4 ¼ lengths to Musical Romance.
“The trip was murderous in the Breeders’ Cup,” said Puype. “She’ll have good conditions here. She’s the fastest 3-year-old filly out here.”
Turbulent Descent, who likes to stalk the pace and then pounces from behind will have her work cut out in the La Brea Stakes, because she would have to contend with immense pace the race has to offer, but this kind of approach should match her style.
