my boyfriend was playing football and has a big turf burn going across his knee that hurts and stings really bad when he bends it. He has another game on Thursday, is there anything to do to kind of stop the pain when you bend it or to help it heal faster?

  1. Really, there is nothing that is going to help it heal faster, but there are some things he can do to make it feel better.  First I would suggest icing the area like you would any sports injury.  This will reduce the inflammation in the area, and will offer limited pain relief.  Secondly, I can't come up with a particular product offhand, but if he would go to a pharmacy they should have some type of first aid spray.   Have him look for a spray that contains lidocaine or possibly benzocaine (these two are the most common).  These will act as local anesthetics and really help with the discomfort.

For his upcoming game he should wear something to protect his knee.  What I've used on football players is non-stick gauze covered with a Turf strip which is a special type of adhesive bandage designed to stand up to high friction.

  2. Knee problems are truly serious he should stop playing or the injury will more sever
